Media and Malaria Thursday, August 02, 2007 Malaria reporting in the press and on the TV is infrequent in Africa and apart from a report in the International Women’s Media Foundation/African Woman’s Media Centre report, Deadline for Health (2004), there is little insight into this and little to inform what might change it. Focusing on the press, here are a few of the questions that a comparative study in The Gambia and Kenya sought to address: What is the purpose of publishing malaria articles in our newspapers? Why isn’t malaria given much coverage? How well-informed are journalists about the burden of malaria? What can be done to increase the level and quality of reporting? The box below 'Exerts from findings' highlights some of the results from this study but also from a review of the impact of a media workshop and seminar (for journalists and chief editors) by studying 6 months of newspaper reporting before and after the trainings. Barriers to malaria reporting
Working with the respective National Malaria Control Programmes as well as the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association the workshops and seminars aimed to address gaps in understanding about malaria and to cover the role of health journalists; provide best practice in researching and compiling stories; and to raise the profiel of malaria coverage by the press and othe media.The study was part of a wider group of media professions who have or are being trained under the same programme. Long-term professional networks between journalists, health professionals and researchers are being fostered; organisations and institutions are being encouraged to ensure that journalists continue to be engaged and encouraged to promote stories about developments in malaria research and policy and available preventive and treatment strategies; steps are being made to make training materials and malaria-related information more widely available to journalists.
